Edgemere Drive-In | Shrewsbury, Massachusetts
The first drive-in the United States opened in Camden, New Jersey, in 1933, but the new theaters did not catch on until in-car speakers became available about a decade later. By 1958, the number of drive-ins peaked at 4,063, but now fewer than 400 remain. The Edgemere Drive-In Theatre opened on US-20 in 1955 and closed in the early 2000s. The sign hung on for another fifteen years until the site was developed.
