The path that led me to photograph bowling alleys was not exactly a straight line. I was never much of a bowler. And growing up in New York, I had never heard of duckpin or candlepin bowling. But as I began photographing neon signs across New England for my first book, New England Neon, I encountered signs for ten-pin, duckpin, and candlepin bowling centers. Next thing I knew, I was lacing up a pair of bowling shoes at a candlepin center in Boston for the first time in decades, and I was hooked. I began to look into the history of this quirky, cherished, and challenging game and -- fast forward a couple of years – I published my second book, New England Candlepin Bowling.
