Route 1 in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts is an unapologetic combination of historic gravity, exuberant entertainment, unexpected juxtapositions, and wonderfully kitschy roadside attractions

I traveled along Route 1 from Maine to Massachusetts to document the roadway attractions in words and images.

The longest north-south highway in the United States, Route 1 received federal designation in 1926 and today extends nearly 2,400 miles from Fort Kent (ME) to Key West (FL).

"Grand" The Grand was built in 1938 after a fire devastated downtown Ellsworth, Maine. The lovingly restored Art Deco theater now operates as a nonprofit performing arts center.
